Exploration and analysis on Yang Tingyun's reconciliation of Christian Thought and Confucian Thought

YANG Xiu, Nanjing University

Abstract:

Yang Tingyun, who lived in the late Ming Dynasty, is one of three most famous figures in the history of Chinese Catholicism. Besides his ministry in the Church, Yang’s major contribution lies in his effort to reconcile Confucianism and Christianity. The author of this article studies Yang’s concepts of “God—the Supreme Parent” and “Character Formation”. He also analyzes how Yang attempted to reconcile Christian thought with Confucian precepts, what he was able to preserve and what he had to discard. In demonstrating how Yang brought together Eastern and Western thought, the author also unveils the posture and approach of religious believers in that historical period.
