Abstract:
The German missionary Ernst Faber, who did missionary work in China in the context of colonial expansion in the 19th century, completed two works on Chinese women with the help of systematic research of Chinese and Western literature and in-depth observation of Chinese society. With the focus on “Knowledge Qiao-Yi” and the connection of various knowledge production elements such as writers, institutions, and disciplines, we can see changes in Chinese women’s knowledge with Ernst Faber’s text as the carrier. Ernst Faber’s knowledge production of Chinese women changes the original knowledge production field regarding research methods and writing dimensions. However, it continues the “heresy model” of Christian missionaries writing about Chinese women in evaluating their morality and the conclusion of their issues. This example of “Knowledge Qiao-Yi” demonstrates both the network of Chinese knowledge production of Western in the nineteenth century and the extensive influence of colonialism within this network.
