Abstract:

In his works of theological anthropology, Gregory of Nyssa gives vivid analogies for various physical and mental abilities, including examples from engineering and artificial technology. However, in the western philosophical tradition, the question of technology has been long suppressed, and most scholars have never tried to understand Gregory's works and ideas from the perspective of technology. This paper attempts to examine Gregory's arguments regarding technology, nature and reason, with the aid of problematics and paradigms contributed by modern thinkers such as Bonhoeffer and Stiegler. The purpose is to embed the idea of the origin of technology into the narration of sin in Genesis, which might offer a new foundation for re-examining the ontological signifi cance of the relationship between human and technology.
