Abstract:
This paper examines Jean-Luc Marion's concept of love as it is articulated in The Erotic Phenomenon. Within metaphysical discourse, eros is often described as passive, upward-oriented, and self-interested, while agape is characterized as active, downward-oriented, and self-sacrificial. However, Marion's perspective challenges this dichotomy, proposing instead a univocal concept of love. This paper begins with a discussion of how to enter the realm of love, delving deeply into the constitution of univocal love and its inherent dual dimensions: the ascending advance of human love and the descending assurance of divine love. Through the analysis of this univocal love, it becomes clear that human love can find assurance in divine love, while divine love is manifested within human love, with the two merging into a singular form of kenotic love. Finally, this concept of univocal love aids in overcoming the way of thinking in metaphysics, allowing for reflection on human ipseity in the special place that opens up through love.
