Abstract:

In May 2023, Hong Kong Baptist University hosted a forum under the theme of "Faith and Chinese Culture: Respect for Heaven and Conduct in Society," the second part of the Christian-Confucian Dialogue Forum. Based on a common consensus on the crisis of modernity with regard to traditional ethics, as encapsulated in "the change from ancient to modern, Professors Tang Wenming and Qu Xutong sought dialogue on the direction of the construction of the ultimate in Confucian and Christian thought. Both sides engaged in fierce discussion on the question of "Debate between the Ancients and the Moderns" while safeguarding the core values of Confucianism and Christianity. Given Professor Tang Wenming's basic proposition to return to the original recognition of Confucianism through recollection, the review summarizes Professor Qu Xutong's analysis of the concepts of presentation and possibility, and his appreciation of the starting points of existence as conceived by Confucians and Christians, in terms of "immediate recollection" and "paradoxical faith." The article then demonstrates the existential signifi cance of their various ideas and finally offers some reflections of its own.
