Abstract:

A lofty respect for Heaven and the reality of human existence on earth: the relationship between the two is that of humanity and the infinite, which is the relationship between God and humanity in Christian philosophy, and between Heaven (/Nature) and humanity in Confucianism. On May 6, 2023, Hong Kong Baptist University organized a forum with the theme of "FAITH & CHINESE CULTURE: CHRISTIAN-CONFUCIAN DIALOGUE." In the first half of the forum which was chaired by Prof. Xie Wenyu (Shandong University), independent scholar YANG Peng and Professor ZHAO Fasheng (Institute of World Religions, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences) gave keynote speeches on the early/original Confucian belief of "Tian (the Supreme deity)" and the concept of "the transcendence of the Middle Way" respectively. From the perspective of the history of religious thought, concern about changes over time in thinking on relations between Heaven and humanity are common to the mission and the undertakings of both Confucian thought and Christian culture.
