Abstract:
It is well known that Lu Xun's "Revenge (II)" is a rewriting of the Passion of Jesus Christ in the Gospels. The divergence between this rewriting and the original text warrants careful examination. This paper focuses on Lu Xun's reading of the Russian writer Artzybashev's novel The Worker Sheviriof, and attempts to argue that the great joy, death, and vengeance experienced by Jesus in the crucifixion as depicted by Lu Xun, while inspired by the image of Sheviriof, remain fundamentally different from his. A Sheviriof-like Jesus Christ is ultimately not Sheviriof. The joy derived from death in Lu Xun's portrayal of Jesus subtly resonates with traditional concepts in Christianity itself.
