Abstract:
This article explores the creative motivations and aesthetic characteristics of the Yiddish poetry of Moyshe-Leyb Halpern, which employs the first-person voice as the poetic subject and rewrites classical Jewish narratives. The article argues that, against the backdrop of Eastern European Jewish immigration to the United States, Halpern establishes a new connection with Jewish tradition by dissolving the meanings of figures and elements from classical Jewish texts, aligning them with the disintegration of the poetic self. In doing so, his poetry resonates to a certain extent with the emotional aspirations of Jewish immigrants.
