Passing through the Fantasy of Love: Lacan's Reading of Symposium

Abstract:

In 1960-1961, French Psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan gave a highly complex and astonishing reading of Plato’s Symposium in Seminar Ⅷ, entitled “ Le transfert”. With Alcibiades’ relationship with Socrates as a prototype of the experience of transference and love in psychoanalysis, Lacan unpacked the fantasy structure in the lover-desirer to discuss the nature of love as well as the structure of love relations, and interpreted the act and drama of love with Socrates’ dialectics. Lacan’s reading revealed that the essence of the act of love is to pass through the fantasy of love.
