The Forbidden "Re-presentation": Exploring Jean-Luc Nancy's Theory on "Re-presentation" and "Presence"

 

Abstract:


The limitations of the West are profoundly connected to the thought of “re-presentation” in Western culture. The traditional metaphysics of  “re-presentation” was utterly crushed and destroyed at Auschwitz, never to be made possible ever again. Jean-Luc Nancy traced this crisis of “re-presentation” back to the problem of “idol” in the iconoclastic movement, and clarified that “idol” exists outside the domain of “image”. Building on this, Nancy further expounded the notions of “presence” and “void” in confronting the crisis of “forbidden re-presentation” in Western culture.
