A Study on the "Preface" and "Introduction" of James Legge's The Texts of Taoism

Abstract:

This essay recapitulates, in a re-organized and re-arranged form, the “Preface” and “Introduction” to Legge’s The Texts of Tâoism. While taking into account his contemporary social and academic milieu, Legge’s method of translation and hermeneutics is discussed in detail so that his general views on Laozi, Chuangzi and Taoism can be demonstrated. The fundamental concerns of Legge’s academic career in Oxford are also shown, through a review of his comparative religious studies in the “Introduction.”
